A prayer journal is a phenomenal thing. Have you ever had a
prayer journal and not write in it for a while? Well I did, and years later what I read from my old entries was very interesting. I saw
dreams that were left behind because of unforeseen situations. I saw hopes that
became blurred because of fear. However, the one thing that still remained
constant was the presence of a loving God who was still there beyond my failure,
and beyond my fear. A God who
loves me so much that He will not let me go. A still small voice that
whispers positivity for every challenge. The voice of truth that tells me a
different story other than the constant barrage of “you messed up again”, or “you
will not have what you want”, or “this is all a lie”. It is that voice
that gives me equilibrium when I have no financial, emotional, or literally
physical equilibrium (because I have vertigo) and gives me the strength to move
on. I invite you to get acquainted with
that voice.
There is a story in the Bible where Elijah the prophet was
in a very dark place. Elijah just had a mountain top experience where he was
able to pray and have the God of heaven send down fire. The fire burned up the water,
sacrifice, and even the rocks. The prophet then prayed and rain came to Israel
after a three-year drought. Israel then turned
back to the Lord and destroyed the 400 prophets of Baal. Elijah was even given
supernatural speed to out run a chariot. Nevertheless, when Jezebel, the wicked
queen vowed to kill Elijah, he became fearful and ran away. The
evidence of God’s presence was quickly forgotten and the fears and cares of this life took over. Yahweh
at that point intervened and showed Elijah that He, Yahweh, still had the same strength
and power that He had before Jezebel’s threat. God showed Elijah that He, Yahweh, was still there even though the outside
situations seemed so big, loud and menacing. He, Yahweh, was found in a still small voice which gave clarity and
guidance to Elijah when Elijah stopped to listen.
This voice is available to all who desire it. In Matthew 11:28
God invites us into a relationship with Him. He says,"Come to me, all you
who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest”. He sees our weary
hearts and invites us to come and get relief. God cares about your hurts and fears. First Peter 5:7 says “Give all your worries and cares to God, for
he cares about you (NLT)”. This lets us know that if we come to God in humility
and request his presence, God will be there. So it all begins by just asking and knowing that God promises to be with
us. After all, He is not a man that He should lie (Numbers 23:19). Romans 5:8 states “but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners,
Christ died for us”. Now if Christ
died for us before we even tried to know him, how much more will He be our friend
when we do come to Him? You have this
assurance. Come to Him for He is waiting and it does not matter what you have
done or are still doing wrong. He knows you need Him. Come.
You may not find him in a big bang. You probably will find Him in the small whisper.
Read I Kings 18 - 20 for the story of Elijah.
